THE NEXT STEP -- Colorado Civil Union Act

The future of the Colorado Civil Union Act - Senate Bill 172 - will be decided this week. The bill will be heard before the House Judiciary Committee at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Capitol. We do not yet have enough confirmed votes to pass the bill out of committee. Fifteen members of our Faithful Voices for Strong Families Coalition gathered yesterday morning to deliver letters and talk to key House lawmakers. This morning, a member of our coalition and I met with House Speaker Frank McNulty. We need your continued support to help pass this bill out of committee.
Here are three things you can do to help:
1. Contact the members of the House Judiciary Committee and ask them to support civil unions. When you call or e-mail, tell them you are part of the statewide Faithful Voices for Strong Families Coalition. We especially need our friends in El Paso and Larimer counties to make calls. Representatives Gardner, Barker, Lee, and Waller are all from the Colorado Springs area. Representatives DelGrosso and Nikkel are from the Loveland area.

2. Join us for a pre-hearing rally from 12:30-1 p.m. Thurs., March 31 on the west steps of the Capitol. If you are able, stay and join us for the hearing that will begin at 1:30 p.m. We are asking supporters of civil unions to wear red.
3. Join us for a special interfaith gathering after the hearing. No matter the outcome, we will meet from6-7 p.m. Thurs., March 31 at First Unitarian Society of Denver, 1400 Lafayette St., for a time of sharing, reflection, meditation, prayer, and song. Please invite members of your faith communities to this special event and join us personally if you can. If you may like to participate in the service, please contact me at 303.324.7923. We are grateful to the Rev. Mike Morran and the members of First Unitarian Society of Denver for providing space for the community to gather after a very emotional day.
